Okay here is a very basic Actions tut, which I hope makes some sense as I only found out what an action was last week and created on a couple of days ago. I use Photoshop 7 so this tut is using that program.

What is an action. An action is a command you give Photoshop (PS). If you wish to do a repetitive task eg give items a particular shadow- you can create an action. If you wish to remember how you created a button and you wish to create a similar button again without going through all the steps you can create and action.

Where are Actions located - go to the main horizontal menue bar - Window - then in this drop down menue double click on Actions and the Actions pallet will appear.

In the Actions pallet you should see a number of items as PS comes with some preloaded. PS has a number of other Actions that come with it which are not automatically loaded and which you can yourself.
In the Action pallet, up at the top right there is a little black triangle - Click on that and a submenue will appear. Go to load and then you can load the other PS Actions onto your pallet. Choose the action and load.

So here we go to try and make an action to create a simple brad.

Open a new file - size does not really matter here, but I will make mine 2x2 inches, RGB, 300dpi. transparent.

Create a circle that fills the space - marquee tool circle, then fill with foreground colour control- backspace or use the paint bucket.

Now go to the action pallet - little black triangle press- in the submenue make sure "button mode" is off i.e there is no black tick besides it.
Choose New Set- name your set - I am calling mine Brad
Choose New Action - name your action - Simple Brad
At the bottom on the Actions pallet you will see a little circle which is now red- this means you are storing the information you wish the action to do in the future.
So, duplicate the circle you created, ctrl J
go Layer- layer styles - blending options
the blending option palette will open.
Choose Bevel and Emboss - inner Bevel, smooth, size 18, soften2; shading angle -49, use global light, shadow colour - choose a darker version of the fill. The rest I have left at the default settings. Contour - yes - left at default setting.
Next click Satin - I changed the colour to that of the base colour, Blend mode multiply, angle 19, distance 11px, size 14, contour I choose single ring.
Press okay and in your Actions pallet you will see the action appear.
Press the dark square at the bottom of the Actions pallet and this will stop recording the action.
Now if I wrote everything correctly you should have a simple brad like this.
Go to the Actions little black arrow, and Save Actions

Now go to your Actions palette again, little black triangle and select button mode - in this mode you can use the actions .

So just create a new layer and say draw a square and fill, then click on your brad action button, and a square brad appears Smiley although not a nice as the circular one.

If any one uses this tut, I would love to see the brad/ button you create.
